If I had a superpower I would like it to be the ability to stay awake during the dvd and stay asleep in bed.\u00a0\u00a0 Since i have clearly lucked out on that one, here I am with my book of New York poetry<\/a> after having played away all my lives on Candy Crush and finished the Graham Nash<\/a> autobiography.\u00a0\u00a0 37 minutes until Out of Doors<\/a> and a\u00a0 justifiable big pot of tea.<\/p>\n

The below is by Charles Tomlinson<\/a>, who turned out to be a Brit abroad.<\/p>\n

All Afternoon<\/p>\n

All afternoon the shadows have been building<\/p>\n

A city of their own within the streets,<\/p>\n

Carefully correcting the perspectives<\/p>\n

With dark diagonals, and paring back<\/p>\n

Sidewalks into catwalks, strips of bright<\/p>\n

Companionways, as if it were a ship<\/p>\n

This counter-city.\u00a0 But the leaning, black<\/p>\n

Enjambements like ladders for assault<\/p>\n

Scale the fa\u00e7ades and tie them to the earth,<\/p>\n

Confounding fire-escapes already meshed<\/p>\n

In slatted ambiguities.\u00a0 You touch<\/p>\n

The sliding shapes to find which place is which<\/p>\n

And grime a finger with the ash of time<\/p>\n

That blows through both, the shadow in the shade<\/p>\n

And in the light, that scours out each thoroughfare<\/p>\n

To pit the walls, rise out of yard and stairwell<\/p>\n

And tarnish the Chrysler’s Aztec pinnacle.<\/p>\n

Enjambement<\/a> is the term given to the poetic device of creating tension, where the meaning runs-over from one poetic line to the next, without terminal punctuation.\u00a0\u00a0 You would think I would know that already, but I must have been off that day.\u00a0\u00a0 I always just called it running off the line.<\/p>\n

Anyway, it’s a darn good excuse for one more picture from our hotel window last September.<\/p>\n
