Patagonia<\/strong><\/p>\n

I said perhaps Patagonia<\/em>, and pictured<\/p>\n

a peninsula, wide enough<\/p>\n

for a couple of ladderback chairs<\/p>\n

to wobble on at high tide. I thought<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

of us in breathless cold, facing<\/p>\n

a horizon round as a coin, looped<\/p>\n

in a cat’s cradle strung by gulls<\/p>\n

from sea to sun. I planned to wait<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

till the waves had bored themselves<\/p>\n

to sleep, till the last clinging barnacles,<\/p>\n

growing worried in the hush, had<\/p>\n

paddled off in tiny coracles, till<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

those restless birds, your actor’s hands,<\/p>\n

had dropped slack into your lap,<\/p>\n

until you’d turned, at last, to me.<\/p>\n

When I spoke of Patagonia, I meant<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

skies all empty aching blue, I meant<\/p>\n

years.\u00a0 I meant all of them with you.<\/p>\n
