Sunday was a special day so we went to a special place, no prizes for guessing this was Vane Farm. We climbed Vane Hill as the day was clear and the views are quite spectacular for relatively little effort. (hahaHaHaHAHA that’s a joke, you should have seen me halfway up). Although I do find it even more difficult to descend as I’m so scared of falling over. But I digress, as ever, so moving on to pictures taken, and here we have a rarity, a picture of the lesser freckled KJH that I’m actually prepared to share with people.
There are upwards of 14,000 pink fronted geese at the reserve just now, plus other winter visitors as per the quote below. Soon the white tailed sea eagles will be back and when that happens you have to be in the viewing room very early if you want a shot of the ‘scopes, or the best table in the house by the front window. Yes, we do walk out to the hides as well but birdwatching from inside with tea and a scone is very hard to beat.
It’s beginning to feel very wintry this week, as more birds are arriving at Loch Leven for their winter holidays. Some of the holidaymakers seen on this weeks WeBS include – a Slavonian grebe at Grahamstone, 82 goosander and 529 whoopers over the whole loch. Tufted duck, pochard and coot numbers remain high. We had a few shelduck in Vane Bay, along with 600 teal, 26 wigeon and 36 goldeneye.
