Well documented swathes of time can hang heavy in January, usually because of the continued short days and long nights. (Other reasons are available).
Should finally see the Cooks today, it’s been far too long.
I have just checked my facts about the Doldrums, which I understood to be an area of the ocean (Atlantic or Pacific, it turns out) where winds could subside for lengthy periods of time and leave a sail powered ship becalmed. As ever with Nature it’s a question of balance, yin and yang or whatever way you would have it, turns out the Doldrums is also an area where savage storms can occur.
- Afternoon tea at Loopy Lorna’s in Morningside today. Fiona and Callum
All in a hot and copper sky,
The bloody Sun, at noon,
Right up above the mast did stand,
No bigger than the Moon.
Day after day, day after day,
We stuck, nor breath nor motion;
As idle as a painted ship
Upon a painted ocean.Samuel Taylor Coleridge, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner
