Anyone who knows me, knows that encroaching deafness is one of my issues. Amongst other things it means that big gigs are out of the question since I cannot afford to lose any more sensitivity in my left ear.
However, as documented, we recently went to hear Suzanne Vega in Glasgow and this song was played. I had forgotten how well it explains the mental state of deafness, even though I don’t think that’s what it was written about. Blood Makes Noise. Think tinnitus, think fear in the face of the inability to decipher the vocal clues being given to you in speech, especially when people turn their faces away.
I am going to ask RNID to make a badge which says “I’m deaf, not stupid. Speak up.” I can recall being shouted at back in 1989 by a colleague. “Haw deefie, gonny listen?”
